Icing Affects Knee Position Sense and Balance
For all our patients, before anyone of you stops icing your injury as a result of reading the headline please read on first.
In this study Aytar and colleagues (2008) compared the effects cold pack (or ice) application and cold spray on around the knee pain threshold. Static single leg balance was assessed. If all this sounds foreign to you remember being asked to stand on one leg and keeping your balance- well this is it. Cold pack or icing affected single leg balance significantly while cold spray also helped pain reduction whilst not sigificantly affecting single leg balance.
So if you ice your knees before training or running please be aware that you may require a longer time to warm up and/or take extra precautions. Better still, ice after training.
